The vocal features a prominent saxophone riff, and has been covered past a number of artists since its get-go release. It was released as a single and became a huge commercial success effectually the earth. It reached number one in nearly 25 countries, selling about 6 million copies worldwide—2 million of them in the U.s.a..[5]

Groundwork [edit]

Composition and writing [edit]

In 1981, Michael was working as a DJ in the Bel Air eating place near Bushey, Hertfordshire.[half dozen] Michael explained in his autobiography, Bare, that he conceptualised "Careless Whisper" based on events from his babyhood. Michael wrote, "I was on my way to DJ at the Bel Air when I wrote 'Careless Whisper'. I have always written on buses, trains and in cars. It always happens on journeys... With 'Devil-may-care Whisper' I retrieve exactly where it kickoff came to me, where I came upwardly with the sax line... I remember I was handing the coin over to the guy on the bus and I got this line, the sax line... I wrote it totally in my head. I worked on it for most three months in my head."[7]

"When I was twelve, thirteen, I used to take to chaperone my sister, who was two years older, to an ice rink at Queensway in London," he explained. "There was a daughter there with long blonde hair whose name was Jane. I was a fatty boy in spectacles and I had a big crush on her - though I didn't stand a take chances. My sister used to go and exercise what she wanted when we got to the skating rink and I would spend the afternoon swooning over this daughter Jane."[8]

"A few years later, when I was sixteen, I had my offset relationship with a girl called Helen," Michael connected.

It had just started to cool off a bit when I discovered that the blonde girl from Queensway had moved in just around the corner from my school. She had moved in correct next to where I used to stand and look for my next-door neighbor, who used to give me a lift abode from school. And one twenty-four hour period I saw her walk down the path next to me and I thought – at present where did SHE come from? She didn't know information technology was me. It was a few years subsequently and I looked a lot different. And so we played a schoolhouse disco with The Executive and she saw me singing and decided she fancied me. By this fourth dimension she was that much older and a large buxom thing – and eventually I started seeing her. She invited me in i mean solar day when I was waiting for my lift and I was ... in heaven.[8]

Michael observed that after he stopped wearing glasses, he began getting invited to parties. "And the girl who didn't fifty-fifty see me when I was twelve invited me in," he noted.

And then I went out with her for a couple of months just I didn't stop seeing Helen. I thought I was being smart – I had gone from being a total loser to beingness a 2-timer. And I remember my sisters used to give me a hard time considering they institute out and they really liked the first girl. The whole idea of "Careless Whisper" was the first daughter finding out about the 2d – which she never did. But I started another human relationship with a daughter called Alexis without finishing the i with Jane. Information technology all got a bit complicated. Jane establish out about her and got rid of me ... The whole time I thought I was being cool, being this two-timer, but there really wasn't that much emotion involved. I did feel guilty near the first girl – and I have seen her since – and the idea of the song was nearly her. "Careless Whisper" was united states dancing, because we danced a lot, and the thought was – we are dancing ... only she knows ... and it's finished.[8]

Andrew Ridgeley came up with the chord sequence on his Fender Telecaster he had received for his 18th birthday.[9] They continued to work together on the music and lyric both at Michael's business firm in Radlett, and Shirlie Holliman's aunt's basement flat in Peckham, where Ridgeley was living.[9] [10]

Demoing [edit]

The original demo was recorded by local music producer Paul Mex, in Jan 1982 alongside those for "Lodge Tropicana" and "Wham Rap! (Enjoy What You lot Practise)" in the front end room of Ridgeley's home (his parents' lounge turned into a makeshift studio) with Mex's TEAC four-track Portastudio. Because most of the 24-hour interval was spent on Wham Rap!... and Ridgeley's mother had returned home by that point, Careless Whisper had to be recorded in one have very quickly. It featured a Doctor Rhythm drum automobile, an acoustic guitar (played by Ridgeley) and a bass guitar (played past Dave W), with Michael's vocal (recorded with a microphone attached to a broom handle).[11] [12] The overall cost of the recording was £20 (largely due to the rental cost of the Portastudio) and the duo landed a deal with Innervision by Mark Dean on the forcefulness of the demos.[13] [14]

A more complete and fully realised 2nd demo was recorded on 24 March 1982 at Halligan Band Centre, Holloway, London with a backing ring and a saxophone riff.[15] All the same, on the same day, Michael and Ridgely were called over past Dean to sign a contract in addition to the record deal, which they did at a nearby greasy spoon café. Michael recalls of that day:

"One of the most incredible moments of my life was hearing 'Devil-may-care Whisper' demoed properly, with a band, a sax and everything. Information technology was ironic that nosotros signed the contract with Mark [Dean] that day, the day I finally believed nosotros had number-one material. That same day we signed it all away. But yous can never really know what you are capable of, you can never actually have that foresight."[15]

Production [edit]

The song went through at least two rounds of production. The kickoff was during a trip Michael made to Sheffield, Alabama, where he went to work with producer Jerry Wexler at Musculus Shoals Sound Studio in 1983.[16] [17] Michael was unhappy with the original version produced past Wexler, and decided to re-tape and produce the vocal himself; the 2d version was the one ultimately released equally a single.

Afterward the backing track and George's song had been recorded, Wexler had booked the summit saxophone player from Los Angeles to fly in and exercise the solo.[18] "He arrived at eleven and should take been gone past twelve", recalled Wham! manager Simon Napier-Bell. "Instead, subsequently two hours, he was still there while anybody in the studio shuddered with embarrassment. He just couldn't play the opening riff the style George wanted it, the manner it had been on the demo. But that had been fabricated ii years earlier by a friend of George's who lived round the corner and played sax for fun in the pub."[18]

While the saxophonist appeared to be playing the part perfectly, Michael told him, "No, it'southward still non right, you see..." and he would lower his caput to the talkback microphone and patiently hum the part to him yet again. "It has to twitch upwards a little simply there! See...? And not likewise much."[xviii]

Napier-Bell consulted with Wexler over Michael'due south dispute with the sax sound. "Is there really something George wants that'southward unlike from what the sax player is playing?" Napier-Bell asked.[18] "Definitely!" replied Wexler.

I've seen things like this before. In that location's some tiny nuance that the sax histrion is somehow non getting correct. Although y'all and I can't hear what it is, it may exist the very thing that volition make the record a hitting. The success of pop records is so ephemeral, so unbelievably unpredictable, we just can't take the risk of existence impatient. But this sax player's not going to get information technology, is he![18]

The version Wexler produced was released later in the year, as a (4:41) B-side "Special Version" on 12" in the UK and Japan.

The tape label Innervision was going to put out the Wexler version of "Careless Whisper" afterward the Social club Fantastic Megamix as early on as 1983. Song publisher Dick Leahy said that while he could not finish the release of the Gild Fantastic Megamix, he could stop the release of this unmarried on the ground that every bit a publisher they "have the right to grant the first license of the recording of a tune of which he controls the copyright". He was unable to do anything about the Club Fantastic Megamix because it was already released material. He said: "Nosotros knew how large that song could be, then information technology was necessary to upset a few people to cease information technology."[19] Towards the cease of 1983, Michael was likewise committed to touring with Wham! to promote Fantastic, so according to him it would not have fabricated sense to release "Careless Whisper" every bit a solo single in the middle of the tour, despite it being role of the setlist.[xx]

Michael after went dorsum to London'due south Sarm W'due south Studio 2 to re-tape the track, the backbone of which was washed with a alive rhythm section in one take, with "loads of stuff bunged on [overdubbed] later" every bit Michael added, although the feel of it was basically live.[21] [22] Michael elaborated on the vocal'due south production and how it turned out in the end:

"Jerry Wexler did 1 recording of "Careless Whisper" with me. Then we re-mixed that, which meant re-shooting the video and then we completely re-did the track about iv weeks before information technology was due to be released. When nosotros originally made it I was totally in awe of Jerry Wexler and it was the first time that I had e'er felt like that about anybody that I'd worked with. Usually I take trouble convincing myself that people know what they're doing. In this instance I had to become drunk in social club to sing, I was and then nervous. Anyway, my publisher [Dick Leahy] and I had loads of discussions most whether the record was skilful enough for the song and whether there was enough of me in it considering it just did not sound like me. I said 'it's groovy. Jerry's done a cracking job on it', and for the first fourth dimension since we'd started I was blind to what was going on because the song was already two and a half years sometime and I just did non take a clue most where else I could take it. Eventually I only thought, 'sod this. I'm going to go in and practice it every bit if it had never been done earlier with the musicians we normally use and see what happens.' The rail was much better because I was relaxed and I retrieve that our musicians did a much amend job than the Muscle Shoals section". [22]

According to English jazz musician Dan Forshaw, saxophonist Steve Gregory had received a phone call to re-record the song's distinctive solo; he was the eleventh saxophone player to record the solo, for Michael was determined to become the sound he wanted.[23] "Session musicians practise not take much thought what they are going to be recording until they arrive, and this was the case for Steve and another saxophonist who was ahead of him in the (queue)", Forshaw recalled.

As usual in that location was a lot of waiting around and the guy in front of Steve threw in the towel saying, 'it's only going to be some crappy B side anyway so I'g off'. Steve waited and then discovered that the solo wasn't that easy to play in the written key, as his old Selmer Mark Half dozen tenor didn't have a top F♯ key. And so, the engineer slowed the tape down so that Steve could record the solo a semitone lower than intended. One time the record was put dorsum to the normal speed, an 'unnatural' saxophone sound was created that sounded a bit like an Alto in the Paul Desmond vibe, but defective a chip more than depth and darkness to the sound. George Michael had simply arrived at the studio and said 'that'southward the one, that's the sax solo I desire'. This could be down to that whole 80s synth concept where sounds became increasingly 'manufactured', or just that George never recognized it was 'incorrect'.[23]

The officially released single was issued in August 1984, entering the Great britain Singles Chart at number 12. Inside 2 weeks it was at number one, catastrophe a nine-week run at the top for "2 Tribes" past Frankie Goes to Hollywood.[four] Information technology stayed at number 1 for three weeks, going on to go the 5th best-selling single of 1984 in the United kingdom; outsold only by the two Frankie Goes to Hollywood tracks, "Two Tribes" and "Relax", Stevie Wonder with "I Just Chosen to Say I Love You", and Ring Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?". The song as well topped the charts in 25 other countries, including the Billboard Hot 100 in the United states of america in February 1985 nether the credit "Wham! featuring George Michael". Spending iii weeks at the tiptop in America, the song was afterward named Billboard 'due south number-i song of 1985. The vocal was #1 on the smooth radio superlative 500 songs of all time chart – proving its iconic status.

Despite the success, Michael was never addicted of the vocal. He said in 1991 that it "was not an integral part of my emotional development ... information technology disappoints me that you can write a lyric very flippantly—and not a specially skillful lyric—and it tin mean so much to and so many people. That's disillusioning for a writer."[19]

Music video [edit]

The official music video (which uses the shorter unmarried version instead of the full album version and was directed by Duncan Gibbins, who previously directed "Wake Me Up Before You Get-Go") shows the guilt felt by a human (portrayed by Michael) over an matter, and his acknowledgement that his partner (Lisa Stahl) is going to notice out. Madeline Andrews-Hodge plays the woman who lures George abroad. Information technology was filmed on location in Miami, Florida, in Feb 1984[24] and features such locales as Kokosnoot Grove and Watson Isle. The final part of the video shows Michael leaning out of a top floor balustrade of Miami'southward Grove Towers.[25] [26]

A showtime original version of the video was edited with the Jerry Wexler 1983 version, and featured Andrew as a cameo, handing over a letter of the alphabet to a dark-haired George. This version had a more detailed storyline, only was then re-edited later on.[27]

Co-ordinate to producer Jon Roseman, production of the video was "A fucking disaster".[28] Co-ordinate to Michael's co-star Lisa Stahl, "They lost footage of our kissing scene so we had to reshoot information technology, which I didn't mutter nigh ... Then George decided he didn't like his hair so he flew his sis over from England to cutting it and nosotros had to reshoot more scenes."[29]

As the band felt they had "screwed upward" the video, further footage of Michael singing the song onstage was later shot at the Lyceum Theatre, London.[28] The video functioning (1984 Version) was officially uploaded to George Michael YouTube channel on 24 October 2009. It has over 852 1000000 views every bit of 2022.
